Do a little online research and you will discover that there are dozens of different skincare routines you could adopt. Then there are those extra procedures recommended by models, actresses, and facial rejuvenation specialists. It is enough to make your head spin. Interestingly though, almost all of the skincare regimens you read about online have one thing in common: the order in which you use your skincare products.
There’s no getting around the fact that there is no single skincare product or routine that works for everyone. Indeed, the differences between individuals are such that any skincare regimen a person could adopt could be tweaked to her individual needs. And yet the order in which we use skincare products is consistent.
Like Painting a House
Let us compare maintaining healthy skin to painting a house. There is a specific order to the way things are done. For example, the first step in painting a house is removing any old paint that is flaking or bubbling. Next, you wash the house. Finally is the primer and finish coat. Do one of the steps out of order and your paint job will not be successful.
For example, what if you put the finish coat down before the primer? Your house would not end up being the color you chose. It will be whatever color the primary is. By the same token, failing to remove flaking and bubbling paint will allow moisture to get underneath the new paint and thus exacerbate the issue.
Likewise, there is a basic process to maintaining healthy skin with the use of natural skincare products. Get the steps out of order and it is difficult to achieve the desired results.
A Three-Step Process
Just like painting a house is a multi-step process, so it is taking care of your skin. The good people at Massachusetts-based Poethique say the following three steps, done in order, provide the foundation of an effective skincare regimen:
1. Deep Cleansing
Whether you practice your skincare regimen in the morning or at night, the first step is deep cleansing. We deeply cleanse in order to remove environmental dirt and debris. We deeply cleanse to remove makeup. This is always the first step for the simple fact that not removing dirt and debris has an impact on the effectiveness of the second and third steps.
A high-quality cleansing oil that dissolves dirt and makeup is the best option for deep cleansing. Soaps work to a certain degree, but they do not tend to cleanse deeply enough. A cleansing oil gets right to the pores.
2. Facial Serum
Next, a facial serum applied to cleansed skin can rejuvenate and nourish. The right ingredients provide the raw materials the body needs to repair and revitalize. Note that this is one area in which individual preferences vary. You may respond very well to a serum from Poethique while one of your friends does not. It really depends on exactly what your skin is lacking.
Last but not least is the third step of moisturizing. Never underestimate the power of applying a moisturizer on a daily basis. Keeping the skin hydrated is one of the single most important things any of us can do. Obviously, hydration follows the cleansing and applying a facial serum. If you hydrate first, you remove your moisturizer during the deep cleansing and facial serum steps.
Skincare regimens can vary from one person to the next. They often do. But the order in which you use skincare products does matter. Cleanse first, apply a serum, and finish off with a moisturizer.
