Hair transplant is a type of surgery which helps in restoring hair from a part of the body which is called as the donor site to the bald part which is called as the recipient site. Hair transplant is not only used for restoring hair on the head but also for eye lashes, eyebrows, chest hair, beard hair, and to fill hair on places where there is hair loss due to scars may be due to an operation or due to an accident.

Different type of methods is available to treat this problem of hair loss. Mostly all transplant techniques include transferring hair–bearing skin from one part of the scalp and then grafting them to the part where there is hair loss.

Hair transplant is a surgical process. There are various methods of doing hair transplant of which FUE (Follicular unit extraction) and FUT (Follicular hair transplantation) are the most common ones. The steps for hair transplant are as follows:

Step 1: Preparation for hair transplant – In the initial stages of the transplant surgery hair follicles from the back of the head are removed and relocated to the bald area.

Step 2: Donor areas are trimmed –Prior to the surgery the hair is trimmed from the donor area.

Step 3: Preparation of the donor area – After the hair from the donor area is trimmed, the donor area is sedated.

Step 4: Tissue from the donor area is removed and the donor is sutured – The donor area has tissues which contains bald resistant hair follicles. These hair follicles need to be removed surgically and the donor area is sutured.

Step 5: Combed hair over sutured donor area – The sutures in the donor are hidden from the patient’s hair that are combed over them. The sutures are removed 10 days after the transplant surgery.

Step 6: Donor tissue trimmed into follicular unit grafts – Microscopes are used by expert surgeons to view the donor tissue for dissecting and preparing the follicular hair graft units.

Step 7: Bald recipient area prepared – Once the local anaesthesia is given to the patient, the recipient area is prepared for the surgical process. Generally, no trimming is required for preparing the recipient area.

Step 8: Incisions made in the balding area – Grafts are placed in the tiny incisions which are made in very irregular pattern in the recipient area.

Step 9: Grafts placed according to their densities – Smaller grafts are placed in front of the hairline and denser grafts are placed behind.

Step 10: After hair transplant surgery – Tiny incisions with short hair would be visible on the operated area after the hair transplant surgery.

Step 11: Closing of the hair transplant surgery- The incision marks heal naturally and the numbness and the redness will vanish with few weeks of the surgery.

It is a type of transplantation technique where thin strip of hair of the patient is removed from the donor region. The follicular unit contains oil glands, nerves, small muscles and fine vellus hair. Thus, these small units allow the surgeon to safely transplant lot many grafts in one single session, which helps in maximizing the cosmetic impact of the procedure. FUT is the most preferred technique by the doctors as it allows the physician to utilize the scalp area fully and it delivers consistent results.

The pain or discomfort reported by patients undergoing FUT is more due to potential swelling in the area where strip of tissue was removed. The scar left by this method is very narrow linear scar at the back of the head.


In this technique one follicular unit is taken individually at a time directly from the scalp with no tissue strip being removed. Hair follicles are removed randomly due to which it results to less density in the donor region, which is not so noticeable.

In this method, no stiches are required and no scars are left.


This therapy makes use of laser or light energy below a threshold and specific wavelength emerging from laser or LED devices. These machines do not produce heat and lasers get absorbed by target tissue.


Digital imaging is used in robotic restoration, due to which the accuracy of harvesting the grafts improves. There is no requirement of extracting tissue through surgery from the donor’s site. Also, no scars are left after surgery.
